The Disturbing Death of Elisa Lam On January 26, 2013, a 21-year-old Canadian tourist named Elisa Lam checked into the Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. But when she didn’t check out on February 1 and her parents couldn’t reach her, they called the Los Angeles Police Department. After 18 days of searching, on February 19, Lam’s body was found naked and floating in a water tank on the hotel’s roof. Guests had complained about low water pressure and strange-tasting water, which led to the discovery of her body.

According to the hotel manager, when Elisa Lam first arrived, she stayed in a room with other travelers, like a hostel. But her roommates complained about her strange behavior, so the hotel moved her to a private room.

The last time she was seen was on surveillance video in the hotel’s elevator. The footage showed Lam behaving strangely, as if she was hiding or trying to avoid something. She moved her hands in a peculiar manner and appeared to be talking to someone who wasn’t visible on the camera.

After Elisa Lam’s body was found and the surveillance footage surfaced, some speculated she might have been under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs. Despite taking medications for bipolar disorder, toxicology tests found no drugs or alcohol in her system that could explain her death.

Another theory was murder, but the autopsy found no signs of trauma. The mystery deepened as it’s unclear how she accessed the roof or managed to climb into the water tank and close its heavy lid, which weighed 20 pounds. To this day, no one knows exactly how these events unfolded.
